Tours (trips in a Ryder Cup format)

A trip in a Ryder Cup format: teams, days, handicaps worked out for you, nightly results on an unlisted page.

A tour is a society trip played as a team event: two teams, a few days of pairs or singles matches worth a point each, and — on own-ball days — every player's individual nett Stableford card alongside the match. The tour's page shows the cup score, each day's matches, the leaderboard for the Green Jacket, the playing handicaps and your rules. It is unlisted: it isn't in the site menu, search engines are told to ignore it, and the travelling party gets the link.

Nothing on a tour touches the society's own records — the handicap index you type is for the trip, and the cards never reach the handicap rule, the championship or the ledger.

Switching it on

Settings → Public site → Tours. That adds Tours to the admin menu. Each tour stays hidden until you tick Published on its page.

Setting up a tour

  1. Tours → New tour. Name, dates, where you're staying, and each team's name and colour (blue and white, say — the colour drives the team's labels, dots and winner highlights on the page).
  2. Players. Add each member with their team and their handicap index for the trip (their WHS index, or whatever you agree). The page shows the indexes added up per team, handy when drawing the teams. Pick a captain a side underneath — the page shows them under the cup score and marks them "(c)".
  3. Days. One per round: course, date, first tee, the format in words (Fourballs, Better-ball Stableford, Singles), how many a side (1 for singles, 2 for pairs), how many matches, and whether everyone plays their own ball. Then the course figures the handicaps come from: par, course rating, slope and the day's allowance (90% for fourballs, 85% for better-ball Stableford, 100% for singles are the usual figures). A scramble day has one handicap a pair instead: a percentage of the lower course handicap plus a percentage of the higher (35% and 15% by default).
  4. Rules. The tour page has a free section for the rules, the itinerary and the prizes, written in Markdown (## Heading, - bullet, | table |). The handicap tables and the results are drawn by the app, so you only write the words.
  5. Publish and Copy link. Send the link to the group.

Playing handicaps are worked out for you: course handicap = index × slope ÷ 113 + (course rating − par), rounded; playing handicap = course handicap × the day's allowance, rounded. If the card in the pro shop shows a different rating or slope, change the day's figures and every number moves with it.

Each evening

Open the tour, then the day's Enter results:

  • Matches: pick the players on each side (the brackets show their strokes for the day), the result — who won, or halved — and the score as you say it (3&2, 1 up, A/S). You can save the line-ups the night before and the results after the round.
  • Cards: each player's own nett Stableford points on own-ball days. Blank means no card.
  • Prizes for the day: best card, longest drive, nearest the pin, in your own words. The best-card hint applies the usual rule — among players who won a point that day (a half counts), the highest card — and lists ties for you to settle by countback.

A scramble day shows each pair's handicap and who gets the difference as soon as the line-ups are saved.

What the page shows

  • The cup: both totals, what wins it (more than half the points on offer), and the points by day.
  • Day by day: the matches with strokes, results and the day's prizes. Before the line-ups are in, the day just says pairings are revealed the night before.
  • Leaderboard: most match points, then highest Stableford total — the Green Jacket order — with each day's points and card. The worst card of the trip (lowest single-round Stableford, lowest total as tie-break) is called out underneath.
  • Playing handicaps by day, the course figures, and on scramble days a table of every possible pair with its handicap.
  • Rules, as you wrote them.
